About South Korea:
The history of South Korea officially began only on August 15, 1945, after the surrender of Japan in World War II and the end of its occupation of the Korean peninsula.
Through a United Nations declaration, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel north. The USSR was supposed to administer the North, while the United States was tasked to help the South. But since the two major world powers failed to agree on the joint trusteeship over Korea, the peninsula was split into two governments, each one claiming to have legitimacy to rule over the entire peninsula.
Despite such unresolved issues, the Republic of Korea was formally established in South Korea on August 15, 1948, with Syngman Rhee as its first president, while the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in North Korea was likewise established under Kim Il-Yung. Months later, on December 12, the United Nations recognized the Republic of Korea as the duly constituted and the only legal government of Korea.
In the midst of reunification negotiations, cross-border clashes and raids at the 38th Parallel deepened until they escalated into a full-blown war, with North Korean forces invading South Korea on June 25, 1950.
The United Nations Command acted swiftly to counter North Korea’s offensive by forming a US-led coalition of 16-member nations to defend South Korea. The war wrought heavy casualties on both sides, in what was thought to be a proxy war between USA and USSR, which were then engaged in a Cold War.
With the People's Republic of China siding with North Korea in 1951, the fighting came to a deadlock close to the original line of demarcation. The warring parties consented to an armistice, an agreement where warring parties agree to stop fighting, on July 27, 1953 at Panmunjeom, now in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
With the fighting ended, South Korea experienced more tumultuous events under the autocratic leadership of Rhee, which was ended by a student revolt in 1960. In 1961, Major General Park Chung-hee launched a successful coup d’etat and introduced a new authoritarian rule that ended with his assassination in 1979.
However, it was Park who laid the groundwork for South Korea’s economic recovery and rapid economic growth from the early sixties to the late nineties. He did this by concentrating on labor-intensive export-oriented manufactured products.
South Korea has attained exclusive membership of the trillion dollar economies of the world, with its GDP of $1.4 trillion, the third largest in Asia, after China and Japan, and 14th largest worldwide. It is the largest of the Four Asian Tigers, including Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. In the 21st century, they have all become advanced and high-income economies.
With the global financial downspin in late 2008, South Korea’s GDP growth decelerated to 2.2% in 2008 and declined 0.2% in 2009. In the third quarter of 2009, however, the economy began to show signs of recovery, primarily due to reenergized export, low interest rates, and reforms in its fiscal policies.
An aging population, pollution and environmental degradation, and a gnawing conflict with North Korea are among the country’s trouble spots. South Korea’s immediate concern is its brewing conflict with North Korea despite efforts leading towards appeasement and reconciliation. They both continue to claim sovereignty over the Korean peninsula and other outlying islands and are still technically at war despite the armistice, which only meant a cessation of fighting not the end of war.
North Korea’s Kim Jong-il, son and successor of former president Kim Il-Yung, continues to defy the United Nations by testing reported nuclear missiles in 1993, 1998, 2006, and 2009. The renegade country has also reportedly deployed missiles aimed at South Korea and is being blamed for sinking the South Korean warship Cheonan in March 2010 that killed 46 seamen.
Reports of conclusive evidence of North Korea’s role in the attack and the threat of war have raised concerns from foreign investors.
